We also support legacy web applications marked for sunsetting

A small transportation trolley patched with some duck tape.

This will be a short post, as the title already says most of it: sometimes a legacy web application is not going to last for much longer, but it still needs some care meanwhile as it’s still providing value for your business and your customers. We’re ok with it and we’d love to support it until needed; we’re not moved away by a fixed expiring date. We did it before and we’re supporting one such application right now.

There may be different reasons for sunsetting an application. In our experience it was usually due to:

  • being related to a service / product that the company will not offer anymore
  • being already rebuilt from scratch from someone else

For the most part, supporting this kind of applications is like supporting any other application. The main change lies in the strategic guidelines, as it’s usually not worth to apply major refactoring / optimization. So we focus on the safety instead, and apply our tools and knowledge to:

  • version the code, so any change is still tracked correctly
  • kickoff the application in a local development environment, so we’re able to debug any issue
  • map dependencies and configurations to make sure we can rebuild if if needed
  • check and improve deploy procedure so we feel comfortable with releasing any change

This is usually good enough to guarantee that everything will work fine until needed.
